Understanding Solar Setbacks
Navigating the rules and regulations for a safe, compliant, and optimized solar installation.
Compliance is Key
When installing solar panels on your home, it's essential to understand that their placement isn't just about maximizing energy efficiency but also involves complying with a variety of local building codes, Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) regulations, and local laws. These guidelines are set to ensure the safety, structural integrity, and proper functioning of the PV system.
From the positioning of panels on your roof to the specific materials used in the racking system, every detail is carefully regulated to withstand environmental factors like wind, rain, hail, snow, and seismic activity.
We Handle the Paperwork
Our team and affiliates are well-versed in these regulations and work closely with local authorities to ensure your solar installation is fully compliant, safe, and optimized for maximum performance.
Setback Requirements by Location
Regulations can vary significantly based on your roof type and jurisdiction.
NYC Pitched Roofs Rules
- Solar panels must maintain a 3-foot setback on each side of the roof ridge.
- An 18-inch-wide access pathway must be preserved along both sides of the roof slope, typically running parallel to the ridge or between panel groupings to allow cross-access.
- Panels must maintain at least 18 inches of clearance around chimneys, vent pipes, and skylights.
